Why our work matters
Occasionally I wonder why our work matters. How does it make our lives easier and promote better engagement with government. I have a sad tale to tell about a garden that I planted which was subsequently destroyed by the council and how I plan to get to the bottom of it.
IDP Hackathon Feedback
Know your hood. Who are your neighbours. How do they vote? What do they earn and what are their houses worth? Learn more about the schools in your area. How do you contact your ward councillor and what are they spending their ward allocation budgets on? Many of us don't know although the data exists. Code for South Africa hosted a mini-hackathon last year with the Open Democracy Advice centre to explore just that.
How much should you be paying for your medicines?
Did you know that medicine prices are regulated in South Africa? Most people don't. We've built an application that makes price comparisons between branded medicines and their generic equivalents easier.
Department of Basic Education - why? why? why?
In a time where "open" has become the new mantra of the socially conscious everywhere, the department of Basic Education is embracing "closed". Open data, open government, open access and open source all suggest freedom and democracy. The Department prefers closed data and closed source.
